In the Blood by R.L. Martinez; A Review

“The Warrior – The war may have ended, but a new battle begins for disgraced prisoner-of-war, Ottilde Dominax. Dreams of her witchbreed twin are visions of death and betrayal. Driven by their grim warning, she escapes her captors and races across nations to save her sister. But she may arrive too late…The Witch –Lady Oriabel Dominax has kept her healing magic secret while she cares for her family’s struggling estate. But the arrival of a new lord hiding secrets of his own, the discovery of a dark and addictive magic and threats from a cruel blackmailer push her closer to disaster. Through it all, the Witch’s Tree calls…” – In the Blood

Oh my gosh, this book was intoxicating even thought I could not province any of the names for the life of me; I had the hardest time putting this book down. This delightful fantasy novel has a little bit of everything: adventure, suspense, romance, magic, shape-shifting, and drama. R.L. does a wonderful job at taking the reader into the magical world she has created, and keeping them there. Her writing transforms the reader into world torn by war where magic is forbidden and revolution is on the horizon. You can feel the hostility of the people and their suspicion of magic gripping the world which is the genius work of R.L. The characters are ones that everyone can relate to and even if the circumstances may not be the same. All of us have felt like we have secrets we need to keep or a past that is holding us back or even the feeling of being different from those around us, are all things the characters feel in In the Blood. R.L. does a beautiful job of humanizing her characters in a way that anyone who would pick up this book would be able to connect with any of the characters. I have also have had the privilege of reading a lot of great YA fantasy novels and this one is right up there with Throne of Glass and The Queen of Tearling (which was incredible, by the way… if you like fantasy then check out that one too!)

It has always been my fascination with fantasy and sci-fiction writers that they are able to create such an amazing world with characters that are unlike anything we have ever read before. R.L. is able to take a genre like fantasy and put her name with such a beautiful page turner that was such a joy to read. She story telling ability is original yet framed with a sense of familiarity in a way that you would willingly spend time with her as she told you the stories of Ottilde and Oriabel. Her creativity is astounding and thought provoking by taking every day struggles and dilemmas of any person and giving them magical edge that will keep you gripped to your seat. The only problem I had with this sleep sucker of a novel (you won’t sleep till you finish, I promise) was that it ended on a cliff hanger! AHHHH!! NOOO! WHY?!?!?  I am hoping against all odds that there is another book coming out that will tell me what will happen to my beloved characters.  How rude of you R.L. to do this to me. So now I have to wait… like every other sad fool waiting for the sequel or next installment of a book series. When will the waiting end?! However.. if you are waiting for another book, you should pick up In the Blood! It is defiantly worth adding to your TBR list! But then.. you may have to wait for the sequel, and the whole cycle starts once more. Hey, if I have to suffer in waiting for the next book, then you will have to suffer with me. The struggle of being a bookworm… constantly waiting for new books, sequels, series installments, or anything from your favorite authors. *sigh* But there are plenty of wonderful books out there to keep up company along the way. Be sure to check out In the Blood, you wont sleep for a few nights but who needs sleep?
